Cat Age Calculator

A common myth is that one cat year is equal to seven human years. It is actually more complicated than that, and the truth is that cats age much more rapidly in the first two years of life.

A cat reaches the human age of 15 during their first year, and are the equivalent of about 24 when they are 2. Each following year, a cat tends to age 4 years for every calendar year. So, a cat who is 5 would be approximately 36 in human years.

Signs of cat age

If the age of your cat is unknown, there are signs you can look for to help determine their age.

Cat's Teeth: Older cats tend to have more staining than younger cats, especially if they haven't been brushed. A kitten's teeth come in between two and four weeks, with their permanent set appearing after 4 months. So, permanent, white teeth means the cat is likely to be around a year old. Some yellowing might place the cat between 1 and 2, with any tartar build up indicating between 3 and 5. Missing teethe probably means the cat is senior.

Muscle Tone: Younger cats will have more defined muscle due to their higher activity level. Older cats are likely to be bonier and may have extra skin hanging or protruding shoulder blades.

Coat: Kittens and younger cats usually have soft, fine coats but older cats have thicker, coarser fur. You may find that a senior cat has patches of white or grey hairs.

Eyes: Younger cats will have bright, clear eyes with no tearing or eye discharge. A cat with some cloudiness is likely to be 12 years or more. If you inspect the lens, examine the iris of the eye. Young cats have smooth irises, while in an older cat, the iris can appear jagged.
